End-of-Life Care for Dogs and Cats in Surrey
If you are reading about end-of-life care, you are probably facing the hardest part of loving an animal. We are sorry you are here. Our role is to keep your dog or cat comfortable, to give you honest information when you ask for it, and to take the practical details off you so you can be present with your pet.
There is no rush. You can call us on (604) 501-0077 simply to talk things through, with nothing committed and no appointment booked.

Veterinary end-of-life care covers quality of life assessment, comfort and pain relief for a pet with a terminal or advanced condition, and humane euthanasia when the time comes. Families are supported in deciding when that time has arrived, are welcome to stay throughout, and are helped with cremation and aftercare arrangements afterwards.
Knowing When It Is Time
Almost everyone asks this, and worries they will get it wrong. There is rarely a single obvious moment, so it helps to look at a pattern rather than a day.
Think about whether your pet still eats with interest, still gets up to greet you, and still does one or two things it has always loved. Think about whether the good days still outnumber the hard ones, and whether that balance has shifted. Pain, breathlessness, and being unable to stand or stay clean weigh heavily.
We will give you our honest assessment when you ask. Many families find it a relief to hear that what they have observed at home is real, and that choosing now is a kindness rather than a failure.
End-of-Life Care and Comfort Before Then
For many pets there is a stretch of time, sometimes months, where the condition cannot be reversed but a great deal can still be done. Pain relief, help with appetite and nausea, support for mobility, and small changes at home can keep an animal content far longer than people expect.
We will be straightforward about what that time is likely to look like, and we will tell you when we think comfort can no longer be maintained. That conversation is part of the care, not an afterthought to it.
What Happens When You Are Ready
We want you to know in advance what to expect, because not knowing is its own distress.
You will have a quiet room and as much time as you need. Your pet is given a sedative first and becomes deeply relaxed and sleepy while resting against you. Nothing uncomfortable happens while your pet is awake. When you say you are ready, and only then, the final injection is given through a catheter in the leg. It is quick and peaceful, and most families describe it as falling asleep.
You are welcome to stay for all of it, to step out at any point, or to hold your pet throughout. Family members are welcome, and some bring a favourite blanket or the family dog so that animal understands.
Afterwards
Nothing has to be decided in the room, and nothing is irreversible that day. We can care for your pet until you have had time to think, and you can change your mind about any of it.
Cremation can be arranged communally or individually, with ashes returned in the latter case. Many families ask for a paw print or a clipping of fur, and we are glad to prepare one. Home burial is restricted by municipal bylaws in Surrey, so please speak to us first.
Talking to Children
Children usually cope better with the truth than with a gentle fiction, and the fiction tends to need undoing later.
Plain words help. Saying the animal died, rather than that it was put to sleep or went away, prevents a good deal of confusion about sleeping and about travel. Children often want to know whether it hurt, and the answer is no. Giving them something to do, choosing the blanket or drawing a picture, gives grief somewhere to settle.
Whether a child should be present depends on the individual child more than on age, and either choice is reasonable. Those who are not present are often helped by seeing their pet afterwards.
Grief Is Appropriate
The grief that follows the loss of an animal is real, and it catches people off guard. There is no correct timeline, and knowing it was right does not make the house quieter. Some people are steady for a fortnight and then undone by an empty food bowl.
You are not being sentimental, and you do not have to explain it to anyone. If you would like us to point you towards pet loss support in British Columbia, please ask. We can also hold your pet’s record rather than closing it, which families in Surrey and Newton tell us matters more than they expected.
